TVGuide Online: "X-Files's Lesbian Shocker" by Michael Ausiello

Post by Dana Doggett on Thu Jun 16, 2011 6:07 pm

Article posted to the SHODDS mailing list back in 2001.

From TV Guide Online:

X-Files's Lesbian Shocker
by Michael Ausiello

During her eight years chasing flying saucers on The X-Files, Gillian Anderson's G-Woman Dana Scully has been paired with a believer (David Duchovny's Mulder), a skeptic (Robert Patrick's Doggett) and a lackey
(Mitch Pileggi's Skinner). Well, if Internet buzz is any indication, the addition of Annabeth Gish's Agent Monica Reyes as a regular next season gives the former abductee an altogether different type with whom she can butt heads: a lesbian.

Here's the lowdown: Although it was heavily implied during Reyes's introduction last February that the sexy sleuth shared a romantic history with Doggett, the show's May cliffhanger - specifically a scene in which she gushed to an in-labor Scully that she looked "amazingly beautiful" - hinted that she may have switched teams in the interim.

In fact, according to executive producer John Shiban, she nearly did. After viewing the titillating sequence again - and reading all of the online chatter - he and fellow producers Chris Carter and Frank Spotnitz considered taking the character in that very direction.

"We talked about it," he reveals to TV Guide Online. "But we [ultimately decided] that it's the kind of baggage that we didn't want to deal with with this kind of character right now. We had other ideas that we were more excited about."

Regarding Reyes's much-scrutinized declaration, Shiban admits that he certainly understands why viewers' ay-dar went off. "I can see where they got that idea," he says, adding that Reyes "does have an affection for Scully that is deep and real, but our intention was that it is non-sexual."

"Most women look beautiful when they're giving birth," reasons Gish. "And it was a very authentic birth experience, so I think it was very harmless."

Still, Shiban isn't completely closing the door on the possibility of Reyes coming out of the closet. "On The X-Files, anything can happen," he winks. "So, I don't want to discount anything. Life is complicated."

I think if they had gone with their gut instinct on her character and done this that she could have been more interesting, instead we got a boring female version of Mulder. Bummer.

I would have adored the avenue of Reyes being a lesbian and where they could have gone with that.
Such a shame, but they wasted her character in general, not just in this way

Yeah, i think it would have added a lot more to the show and then hopefully brought new life to the dying show at the time.

it did seem like they stopped taking as many risks, but I loved that they were still doing whimsical episodes like sunshine days towards the end

Yes, I love that ep too. I like how they made Reyes a bit of a geek. I am geek too!

I think they were afraid to freak out the sensitive XF fans who were so used to just seeing Mulder/Scully as the only relationship option, and with how those M/S ppl reacted to Doggett and Scully, well, honestly I don't think they wanted fans to downright hate Reyes right off the top by making her a lesbian, because that would mean that Reyes too would fall in love with Scully and wish for her affections too.

Am I wrong in assuming that more XF fans liked Reyes right off the top than they did Doggett? I always seem to see more hostility towards Doggett/Robert in the fandom than I see towards Reyes/Annabeth.

I am not really sure if they liked her more readily than doggett, I certainly did, but then I was a massive Annabeth fan anyway, so was just elated for her to be in it at all.
It does seem people were quite reluctant to embrace Doggett though. I wasn't ever interested in a MSR so I didn't have the emotion invested in that area to really mind that Mulder had a replacement

Because Annabeth was on TXF I have seen her movies. I hadn't heard of her until she was on XF. I prefer her other movies/TV shows over Reyes though. I felt that she didn't quite gel with the Reyes character, and I blame that on poor writing and development of her character - how can you honestly portray a fictional character when you have very little character information to go on?

I still think that Doggett/Robert has a more difficult time being accepted (heck, even tolerated) by most XF fans. I just think it was because he was "replacing" Mulder and also threatened the "precious" MSR. Haha!

I do agree with you on both your points, reyes was woefully underwritten and unfortunately there was a legion of fans who made it a very difficult role to take on for robert patrick

Yes, as I remember it there was far less hostility towards Reyes / Gish joining than Robert. I guess by then perhaps it wasnt as new an idea as Doggett was and yes, it was mostly girls who loved David Duchovny that didnt want Mulder to go and have a new man. I really doubt if it was Scully being replaced, there would have been that massive outcry from the 'fans'.

Ooh thank you for posting! I havent seen that article or remember it. The only one I have seen in writing is the one I posted on another thread "Is X-File Agent Gay?"

I think they should have made Monica gay (I am not being biased cos I am lol!) it would be interesting how she would live her life and what it would endure her to be a gay FBI agent...

You're welcome! I'm glad I found the article too.

I agree with you, I think Monica should have been gay too. It would have given the writers something other than trying to emulate Mulder/Scully with she and Doggett during season 9 - thus would have made her more unique as a character, therefore also more interesting. Imagine if she had a relationship history with Shannon McMahon instead of Brad Follmer... oooohhhh....

Or a relationship history with Barbara Doggett... now THAT would have been (very soapy) awesome!
