That is AWESOME!!! I don't know what it is about me, but I pretty much came out of the womb demanding the likes of Mel Torme, Frank Sinatra, et al......oh, yeah, and pretty much anything in the baroque and chamber realm of classical music. I was a bit of a musical freak as a child, but I made up for it by studying classical piano. which made my grandmother quite happy. (I still have the family piano -- it was a house-warming gift to my maternal grandparents after they married in 1929.)
I got to see Mel Torme perform live at the Hollywood Bowl in August 1995, just a few years before he died. Also performing that night were Peggy Lee (in one of her very last live performances) and the fabulous pianist George Shearing. It was quite an evening, and I am forever grateful that I got to see Mr. Torme perform live, especially since he ended up having his career-ending stroke just a year later, in August 1996. Peggy Lee was very obviously in decline at that point, so her performance was actually a bit sad. But Mel? Oh, my GODS. While his vocal range had been diminshed a slight bit by age, he was nevertheless MASTERFUL. As he scatted and be-bopped around with the music, he hit every single note with utter precision. It was truly wonderful. Again, I am so grateful I got to experience his music and talent and stage presence live within my lifetime. He was a true vocal artist.

LOVE Diana Krall. I am also a fan of her husband, Elvis Costello. Good Gods, if they ever had children, can you just imagine the genetic potential for musical creative genius????? Whoa......

Wow this is very cool that you saw him live! His voice is so uninque and really he made the standards his own when he sang them. So great. I actually didnt know he had passed away though.
I am the same, I think I came out of the womb loving soul music and older music like Frank Sinatra and Sarah Vaughan. Its kinda in my blood and never leaves me no matter what newer music I like or come across or how far I stray from it, I always come back to LOVING it.

Re: Top FIVE favorite artists!
I think I tried to post on this thread before but couldn't come up with a top five of so many artists I love.
I'm going to try now but will probably kick myself later.
Chris Isaak
Faithless
Sylver
The Monkees
Enya
There, I did it, but that was kind of tough!

I have a weird taste in music
Recently I fell in love with "Personal Jesus" version by Johnny Cash. I think it's way better than the original one.
