Are you willing to bash a character to make your pairing work?

Post by Lilith on Fri May 14, 2010 2:08 pm

Just a thought... I saw that in other fandoms, and personally I do enjoy that, especially when the character has qualities that allow the bashing. It's fun to read how people are willing to put one character down, just so the other has a chance. But then, that's just me. What do you think?

I prefer to be true to character rather than change who they are to make something work.

I don't like character bashing. I've been told that I bash on Mulder in order to make Doggett/Scully work, but I see it as myself critiquing the character's flaws and potential behaviour.

I don't outright say "I hate Mulder. He's an asshole, therefore Doggett is better for Scully." I like to back up such ideas with other ideas that allow for the statement "Doggett is better for Scully than Mulder" to ring true, and I try to find such things within canon.

I agree with you Cassie, Mulder was an ass to Scully and he's too clingy. banana Doggett's very grounded and she needs that. doggett cloud9 scully1

Nope. A character is going to be how I see the character....but I'd never bash to make a pairing I admire work.

I tried to character bash once, but it wound up being such a terrible fanfic that I trashed it before I even typed it up on the computer (yeah, I'm old, and this was back in my handwriting days :)

Now I just try to stick as close to character as I can. I think my problem is usually the other way round, if I like a character, I have a tendency to sometimes gloss over his or her flaws. And that is why I need a beta whenever I write rolleyes

I typically don't like it though it can (but doesn't often) work well. Usually it's a lazy way for the writer to add conflict to a story and forced drama is usually pretty boring.

Nope, can't do it. Characters are the way they are and nothing I say will change it. I like the facts more and they speak for themselves. I just think Mulder is an ass because of his behaviour, not because Doggett is better. I think Doggett and Scully are sexy and this has nothing to do with Mulder or him being an ass (in my opinion) but the way Mulder acts does help make Doggett look better but that was in the script, not in my head.

I try not to bash, but when a character comes off as a complete jerk, I try to make an author's note explaining why they are acting the way they are.

More often than not, it's Mulder....
