Re: Sherlock
They made more of this show? Wow, I hope they release more than just season one here in Canada..
As to the previous inquires about the orginal Sherlock Holmes books, I *Love* them, especially the volume that has Sherlock's last cases.

Re: Sherlock
I would imagine that if you saw the 1st season, then Canada would show the next one.
I only have a book of selected short stories of Sherlock Holmes and I have heard the last cases' stories are good. I saw a massive collection of the books in a charity shop before christmas and wanted to buy it but didn't and now I wish I did.

Sherlock won best mini-series / movie at the Critics Choice Awards on the 19th of June 2012. And its lead star, Benedict Cumberbatch won best actor for playing Sherlock Holmes.
Well deserved!

Re: Sherlock
I'm just curious, is there a name in the whole history of names that is more English than Benedict Cumberpatch?
I tried watching this but sometimes I have the attention span on a gnat, and I didn't get it right away so I turned it off. I don't get what the time period is supposed to be. I'll have to give it another try on a day when I've had less sugar maybe.

Re: Sherlock
Its meant to be set in the current time.
But I have to say, on my 1st watching of it I fell asleep after an hour of all 3 of the 1st season. The second season is far tighter and faster moving. But before the 2nd season aired I rewatched the 1st season and concentrated better on the rewatch. Like you, I was slightly confused by when it was meant to be set, Sherlock's personality and the crimes but it was actually very simple when I understood the setting and how the creators were basically taking the books and asking "how would they be written if they were written now and how would it look if it was now and how would these men be perceived if they existed now?"
It is a long show too, and i didnt think it would be 1 hour 30 mins. I thought it was 45 mins. Its a dark looking show and it can be quiet and complicated so I can appreciate losing attention on it. But if you keep with it I promise you its worth it!
Benedict Cumberbatch!! (not Cumberpatch!!
) What a name! Both his parents were actors too...his mum was in Doctor Who a few times and was in "UFO".

I didn't make this vid. I wish I did!!! Man I wish I did. This might be the most perfect Sherlock vid ever. I have it saved on my bookmarks and sometimes just watch it randomly now and then when I am on the laptop. The music, the clips, the dialogue are PERFECT. People need to watch this show so badly, this vid encaptures the beauty and awesomeness of this show and their sweet relationship.

Re: Sherlock
Such lovely vids Claudine!Sherlock is one of my top three favourite shows in the whole world, it's just such an amazing display of craftsmanship. Acting, writing, directing, music, even set design - there's just so much to enjoy, it's a masterpiece. You can really tell that it's been made by really dedicated and loving fans of the original stories, and it's such a smart adaptation. Moffat and Gatiss seem to have thought of everything, every little detail when it comes to updating the world of Sherlock Holmes.
And while Benedict Cumberbatch is definitely a revelation as the titular character, it's Martin Freeman's performance that really gets me. I was in love within the first minute of the show.To answer the question about the literature - I've only read Hound of the Baskervilles, however I have the complete works waiting for me when I finish the book that I'm currently reading.
P.s. Sherlock was just nominated for a whole stack of Emmys!

Moffiss (Gatiss and Moffat) are massive fans of the stories, they know them like the back of their hands and as you said, you can tell that so much by the small details, the stories they insert. Everything about it is so DETAILED and so sophisticatedly, cleverly, entertainingly done for everyone, fans of the books or not. I love the set design SOOOO MUCH!!! adore it all with all my heart and watch it again and again. There is always so much detail that on every watch, I notice something new.
I agree, Cumberbatch is fab, of course he is, he was born to play this part but also is just a fab actor in everything he does, but Freeman really makes you wanna watch his reactions, enjoy is reactions. Its like we are him, we would react to everything like he does and he does it so well.
Sherlock is just winning the awards or being nominated everywhere almost! And rightly so! I am so glad America enjoy this British show. Its quintessentially British in the best way. Really realistic of how we talk and behave. I still don't understand the mindset in the US making their version, when this one is so popular in the US anyway and right now, nothing can compare and it was just their attempt to do what Moffiss are doing.
I am a Sherlock Holmes fan of other interpretations, most significantly, the Basil Rathbone b/w films. I adore them and this TV show is very close to that. Especially the last ep of season 2.
Anyway, I bought more stories recently. I like the books with loads of stories, not just one but they are harder to find. I had "A Selection" book and then I got a double one of "The Adventures" and "The Memoirs". I loved the Empty House and the Final Problem. I love the way Sherlock talks so sweetly to Watson. Like the show, I read these stories again and again.

Grrr, don't even get me started on the US version, I could rant on for a VERY long time about how angry it makes me, and all the different reasons why. Hey, if it turns out to be great, that's lovely, but I really, sincerely don't think it will. Damn it America, couldn't you just leave it alone?
The only other version of the story (that is, the only other direct interpretation) I've seen is the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes film. I've heard that the second one was excellent, but I saw the first and found it to be an incredible load of tripe. I know the rest of the world seems to be desperately in love with Robert Downey Jnr, but I found him so irritating in Sherlock Holmes that the film was nearly unwatchable. I wanted to do myself an injury.
I have always heard very positive things about the Basil Rathbone films - from the cast and crew of BBC Sherlock, no less. At the moment though, Benedict Cumberbatch's Sherlock is the only one for me.
And yes, he's just fabulous in everything, he's a brilliant actor.I've gotta say too, that I also really love Mark Gatiss' Mycroft Holmes, and I can't even explain why. I just find him really fascinating to watch. I had a Sherlock-themed birthday party this year, and everyone dressed as a different character, and I was Mycroft. Consequently I have discovered the unexpected joy of wearing suits.

Re: Sherlock
And did you have your umbrella?! Oh I love Mycroft too and Gatiss is just perfect as him and so convincing. I am just mesmerised by him when he is in a scene and for the 1st season did not even know it was Gatiss!!
Sherlock themed BD party!? NOW THAT IS AWESOME!
I havent seen the Sherlock Guy Ritchie films because 1) I hate Guy Ritchie's work 2) I dont buy RDJr as Sherlock at all and 3) I cannot stand Jude Law. I know they are really popular but they do not strike me as Sherlock-y at all. They dont seem true to the original atmosphere but I could be wrong because I havent seen them but I havent seen them for reasons. I would be curious to see them but I am not rushing it. If they are on TV or something.
Basil Rathbone ones are very much like the BBC Sherlock ones. They are set in the current time of making, they take bits here and there of the books and sometimes make new things from it....they apply it to the current time of making, for example WWII, being when America was not involved and one story was to encourage the country to join in. The cuteness of Sherlock and Watson is very good in the Basil ones, similar to the BBC one now.
I saw the trailer for Elementry. Like you I could write a book on why its a bad idea. When I saw the trailer I hated the idea even more, and was surprised it even got past a Pilot. Like Robert D Jr, I do not buy Johnny Lee Millar as Holmes at all and of course have big issues with them making , Watson a woman, making him a hardcore recovering drug addict (Holmes was not necessarily addicted, he used some drugs and tobacco because he thought he has an overly active mind, and needed the stimulation when he did not have a case. He seemed to have some sort of control over it or simply a case coming would make him forget the drugs and drug usage in those days was more relaxed than it is now. Anyway, I just think its the wrong thing to focus on because the books didnt focus on it that much. It was a trait but it was not a big deal in the books.
I did actually write a lengthy reply to someone on Tumblr who was complaining about Sherlock fans complaining about Elementry and explained why we have problems with it and why her thoughts on it all weren't correct or said with facts.
I have issues with where it is set also. Why New York? It doesn't suit it. Somewhere like Baltimore, Washington or Philadelphia would suit it better. And I cannot stand Lucy Lui. I dont think she can act at all. She is also too much of a face for anyone to believe her as a character.

Re: Sherlock
I did indeed have an umbrella, I would have been lost without it I'm sure.
No-one would have known who I was.
Urgh, yes, RDJ doesn't work as Sherlock in the slightest, in my opinion. That first Guy Ritchie SH film was an exercise in mediocrity, characterised by bad characterisation and peppered with moments of utter stupidity.
It failed completely to capture the dynamic of Holmes/Watson, or even just the dynamic of Holmes, for that matter. It was idiotic tripe.
Did you get a chance to see Danny Boyle's stage production of Frankenstein, with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller alternating in the roles of Frankenstein and the monster? They screened a live recording of each version of the show in cinemas here recently, and it was absolutely amazing. Watching JLM do a fantastic job actually made me even less hopeful that Elementary would work out though, since I now see it as an excellent actor making a terrible decision to partake in a disaster of a show, I don't think his talent will save it at all. And I agree, I'm very bothered by the insistence upon amping up the drug-taking aspect of the character, it was never a pivotal aspect of Holmes in the books (to my knowledge) and making it a major point around which the character revolves sounds awful. The whole set up is awful - Sherlock fresh out of rehab, Watson hired as a sober companion...that in itself totally messes up Watson as a character and the dynamic between the two as partners, and that's without even talking about making Watson into a woman. You just KNOW the whole thing will turn into a big will-they-won't-they romantic thing, the beautiful Holmes/Watson relationship will never be there, and without it you might as well not bother. The trailer was terrible in so many ways, I shudder to think what the actual show will be like, and I don't see how they can save it from itself...
It annoys me that there's such a stigma now about Sherlock fans picking on Elementary. On Tumblr, on IMDb, wherever you go it seems that people automatically claim your opinion isn't valid because "your just pissy about America doing a version too". Sure, I am pissed about that, but I have a Helluva lot of reasons, it's not 'just coz' of anything.

No I didnt, I didn't even know much about it until I saw some stuff on Tumblr. It does look good.

Nope, given how awful the script it and how the essence of the character and the atmosphere is missing, I would say he is dealing with a lot of crap. I thought they might use an American to play Sherlock if they were to do their own. I wonder who would be more suited?
And I agree, I'm very bothered by the insistence upon amping up the drug-taking aspect of the character, it was never a pivotal aspect of Holmes in the books (to my knowledge) and making it a major point around which the character revolves sounds awful.
A lot of drugs weren't even illegal back when the books were written and it was not as taboo as it is now and ppl took drugs in a different way than they do now. I wonder if they will explain WHY Sherlock is into taking drugs. If he is addictive to anything, its solving crimes. I think America think that anti-hero flaw aspect of him is gonna be gritty and real and cool to ppl who think drug stories are cool and interesting. However, its not what Sherlock is about and making that a big part of him is really stupid.
The whole set up is awful - Sherlock fresh out of rehab, Watson hired as a sober companion...that in itself totally messes up Watson as a character and the dynamic between the two as partners, and that's without even talking about making Watson into a woman.
Watson is with Sherlock by accident, not assigned to him. Ahhhh!!
You just KNOW the whole thing will turn into a big will-they-won't-they romantic thing, the beautiful Holmes/Watson relationship will never be there, and without it you might as well not bother. It will be their safety card, won't it. And it will be there, whether the write it or not. Most American audiences look at a man and woman together and think about them in a romantic way.
It annoys me that there's such a stigma now about Sherlock fans picking on Elementary. On Tumblr, on IMDb, wherever you go it seems that people automatically claim your opinion isn't valid because "your just pissy about America doing a version too". Of course we are pissy about America, who haven't had a good t show idea in a long time, taking the wonderful idea of Sherlock in the modern day and insulting us that our own is not good enough and they can do it their way and better! BBC Sherlock is popular in America and its made so well, I watch it again and again and can't find a fault with it. Its so tight and detailed and so lovingly made. Making the two leads a man and woman makes it the same kind of investigating show as NCIS, CSI, The X Files.....you name it. Nothing original about this idea at all. They might as well make Sherlock a woman and then it would make more sense to have Watson a girl.
Moffat met up with the network and discussed doing a show with them for their own Sherlock but he wasn't sure and told them he would get back to them. Before he did, they had gone and done their own show without him. I just dont get it or understand the need. Its insulting to Moffat to have the US network ask him to do another for them when the one they make is perfect!!!
I doubt the ones who are making Elementary know the books inside and out like Moffiss do.
And the trailer makes me so mad. Seeing Sherlock get excited about the woman being choked by the killer and he was right in front of her, so that she might say what the man looked like, is not the way Sherlock works. He goes by facts, rarely witness statements. He would not revel in the fact a woman was being choked in a way that leads him to the man just because he was so close she could identify him. He is not that cold and would look at clues that no one could come up with. Any cop could ask the woman if she could identify the man, thats not how Sherlock does things. And Watson is not shocked by Sherlock most of the time. He is impressed and he knows Sherlock so easily that he knows Sherlock does not react like many others do and he tells him off like a mother would, but he is not shocked by it. If anything is new to Watson, he is just learning about Holmes.

Ah, it is a cause of much rage to me to think about Elementary. It horrifies me to think that they'll take something which has just been done so wonderfully and turn around and twist it into something unoriginal and gimmicky, and that the drivel they create will then be the show broadcasting to a majority audience and giving the whole concept of Sherlock Holmes a bad name by association. I shudder at the thought.
At least we have our faultless BBC Sherlock to retreat back to, and at least we have a third season to look forward to (even if it is a long, long way off yet).

Re: Sherlock
Oh man, I cannot wait for the 3rd season. The best show will win in the end!!
I am currently having big Doctor Who withdrawal symptoms because it would normally be on at Easter but its being moved down to Autumn time now. Lord knows when the Sherlock waits gets TOO long I will feel very low about it all!

Re: Sherlock
I am in British tv withdrawl since Who is pretty much over until smeging spring time with one little christmas special to look forward to.
We watched the first season and the first ep of the second season. I love that this is obviously a quality show, well thought out with a lot of work and heart put into it.
I haven't read the original books, but like Claud mentioned with the narator going from Watson's books to blogs is a neat way to bring the story into this century with out robbing it of it's origins.
What I don't like, or what I would like to see change/progress is how icy cold and careless Sherlock is. There are moments of humor that work as a tension breaker, but so far they have not endeared me to him. He seems a lot like Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang with a touch of Professor Snape from Harry Potter; superb intellectual capabilities meshed with a complete ignorance of the feelings of others. If he would warm up and start to care about someone, he would be more human to me. Right now the only person in the world that seems to matter to him at all is Watson.
If we can't see him make this shift, I'd at least like to know more about the trauma that made him this way.
Also, I F%*ING LOVE THE WALLPAPER!! AHHH!! I want their living rooom!!!!!
And the coats, this show is worth watching for the coats and wallpaper alone. You could just watch it with the sound off and go, 'damn, that's some awesome coats and wallpaper."
Wait wait wait, Who is being moved to the Fall??? Next fall?? THERE IS NO JUSTICE IN THIS WORLD!!!

Re: Sherlock
I also thought it was weird because the recent movie versions with Robert Downey portray Sherlock as a bit of a naughty boy, but in the BBC version he is sexless. From what I recall of the old tv show and the old radio show, his sexuality really didn't come into play.
What was the original like in the book? My guess is that they were too Victorian to go into it, so it's open to modern interpretation?

Well done you!!!
British TV rocks right now!!! Hop on!

I have read the books, and he is as detached and emotionless, even conniving in the books. In fact, there were so many adaptations of this characters through eras where his personality would seem so off and unlikeable, he got sort of changed and made to be more likeable. Yet this version, the BBC one, is the most accurate - (though there was an attempt at this with the ones in the 80s played by Jeremy Brett and the Basil Rathbone ones in the 30s and 40s were quite close, even for that Hollywood era). The character will do anything to prove a point, show he is the clever one and actually has no idea about how people feel. Like he says in one episode, he doesn't think caring about the victims will help find them, he doesn't think that its worth knowing about the Solar System because he has so much in his head to deal with. Its as if he is such a genius, that nothing else fits in and only the really important stuff is able to fit. Of course, we would all say caring about people and their feelings is most important, but in regards to being a detective, I am not sure. But he does care in this unique way of his.
He actually makes a shift in the 2nd and 3rd eps of season 2. Very noticeably when he sees something he cannot explain, almost alienates Watson completely and then in the last one, he does a big thing in order to save "his friends."
The thing I love about Sherlock, in regards to how unemotional he is, how brutally truthful he is, is his reasons are for information, in order to stop others getting killed. Now, if that is not awesome and backwardly heroic, I don't know what is.
That is the beauty of Sherlock, his friendship with Watson. Watson "puts up" with Sherlock, like a married couple. Somehow, no one else has time for him, except for Watson. Sherlock knows this and loves his company, loves his help. Thats how it is in the books and thats how it is in this show...the many times he has gotten Watson to do an errand for him, asked him to go somewhere with him, confided in him.
I think the last ep is a massive moment for the character, he shows his insecurity and uncomfortable attitude to social niceness and Watson is holding his hand all the time, because Watson seems to understand him. Even if we don't, Watson does and that's fine.
Sherlock also would take cocaine in the books. His character was not exactly the perfect man at all. If anything, he was really annoying, really cold and hard to be around. But he was brilliant and everything he was doing was for a good reason.
